Styles, Movements and Avant-Garde

Meyer Schapiro
A critic, teacher and art historian said that style is
'A system of forms with a quality and meaningful expression through which the personality of the artist and overall outlook of a group are visible. It is also a vehicle of expression within the group, communicating and fixing certain values of religious, social and moral life through the emotional suggestiveness of forms.'

Avant-Garde

Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase based their 1970 design of ITC Avant Garde on Lubalin's logo for Avant Garde Magazine. The condensed fonts were designed for International Typeface Corporation in 1974 by Ed Benguiat. ITC Avant Garde Gothic is a geometricmsans serif type, that is, the basic shapes were made with a compass and T-square; the design is reminiscent of the work from the 1920s German Bauhaus movement.

Claude Henri de Saint- Simon

"We the artists, will be the vanguard of the intellectual revolution. The power of art is in fact the most effective and the fastest. We have all sorts of weapons: when we want to propose new ideas, we engrave them in marble or we draw them on a canvas."
