Helvetica

An insightful view into the birth of helvetica and the revolution brought with it to the graphic industry.

Through this documentary I learned that with the introduction to Helvetica, grids and alignment, it seemed that graphic design became an equation which had been solved as designers jumped onto the band wagon of order and structure, easily accepting the cultural norms of design as Swiss design took over. However, after the First World War, things took quite a reverse. People began to question social and political norms. Designers began to question traditions and those questions brought forth a wave of postmodernity. David Carson and Sagmeister were the pioneers of postmodernity. I laughed at the part when Carson mentioned how he was not even aware of how he aggravated Modern Designers when he rejected cultural norms and traditional graphic practices.
